Today's Dream

Looking to Dr. King's words of the past, i wonder what this historic figure would say today.  I do not doubt that he would comment on this year's recent election, but i think he would talk about it in a manner that most people would not expect.  Perhaps he would bring up that Barack Obama is the first African-American president and is a man who came from humble upbringing and grew into a man of intelligence and decorum.  But i think Dr. King would stress the importance history has played on this election, not just for African-Americans and minorities, but for people of all races, genders and even religions.  From our new president, we can see hope and inspiration as well as a long tradition our country has for progress.  Collectively, we have come a long way since the times of the Civil War and segregation, but we have not crossed the finish line.  We have not achieved the utpoia in which we set out to conquer.  There is still inequality to be found, but it has most recently spread to other groups such as people of Mexican, Latin American and Middle-Eastern dissent.  This inequality or discrimination for these particular groups was brought on by events in history, just like the African-American men.  But should these people not "hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" and should not be treated like equals?  Dr. King would most certainly protest.  After eloquent word after eloquent word, he would possibly say that we should all enjoy our recent impact in American history today, but wake up tomorrow knowing that our job is not done.  We have not reached the finish line and we still have a long race to run.
