When Dreams Become a Reality

Today is a momentous day in American history. Today is a day to celebrate the present and look forward to the future. In order to have a successful future we must pledge ourselves to the hope and dream that is Barack Obama. We are all Americans. We are not united by a common race or religion, so instead we must unite through a common goal that is justice and equal opportunity for all. Without unity there is only discourse. Discourse would indubitably tear our nation apart and leave no hope for the freedom and justice for all that we so long for. Since my speech over 45 years ago great changes have been made. Today all people are equal and free and have a chance to pursue their happiness. In the last 45 years the inalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are actually a reality for more than just a select group of people. Today those rights are not a luxury. They are a necessity. Our nation is one of diversifying cultures and peoples. The uniqueness of the heritage of this country is a strength not a weakness. Together we have overcome a civil war and segregation. A country that can overcome such enormous hurdles as these is indeed a great nation. Treating different races with anything less than equality will lessen the strength that we have achieved at this point in time. We have come far in dispelling racism in many. Far, but not far enough. We must continue to fight the ignorance that racism is born from. We have come a long way in the fight towards freedom, justice, and equality for all, however the fight does not stop here. We must continue to strive for a nation of peace and prosperity. Today we have made a great step in this direction. Obama has a vision for the future. This vision entails a future with equal opportunity for all. He has promised to strive for better healthcare and education, and as president he now has an opportunity to make these things happen. Our nation has come a long way. Our duty now is to continue on in our work to better our nation so that dreams of total justice and equal opportunity for all are no longer a dream but a reality.
